A new 24 track on the Entertainers label includes a first time on CD for I Just Found Out About Love, Little Child and I Promise You. Other hard-to-find tracks include, Never Let Me Go, Song Of Delilah, Tenderly, Because You're Mine and There Goes My Heart.

24 tracks for £5 can't be bad. Catalogue number is Entertainers CD 368.

Jazzy - The Beginnings

A new French CD produced by the Hot Club de France on the Milan label CD 74321 32963 - 2 contains 16 very early tracks by the King Cole Trio.

Included are eight of the original Deccas, one of the Lionel Hampton tracks (Blue Because Of You) and some pre-Capitol vocals - All For You, My Lips Remember Your Kisses (listed as My Tips!!), Got A Penny and I'm Lost.

Nat King Cole - Carnegie Hall Tribute

On 8 and 9 July 1997 there was a two-concert tribute to Nat King Cole at Carnegie Hall, New York. Keen Cole collector Jorge Mochkovsky of Argentina attended these concerts and has kindly sent me copies of the programmes and back-up material. Copies of these are available - please contact me.

Principal artists taking part were Buddy Greco, Diane Schuur, Abby Lincoln, Freddy Cole, Carol Sloan, Mark Murphy, Margaret Whiting, Ruth Brown and Julias La Rosa.

Aussie Double CD

So many people have been trying to get the Australian double CD mentioned in King Cole Comments no 18. (The Nat King Cole Collection). Capitol re-issued it and at a cheaper price (around £16 instead of £20).

The packaging is slightly different but the 40 tracks are the same as mentioned in KCC 18. The CD's main claim to fame is its inclusion of the original Dave Cavanaugh version of Can't (not the Billy May version) plus the first CD issue of Let True Love Begin - with the vocal group, but without the stereo rhythm. It's available from HMV in London and Tower Records in London.

A Touch Of Class

A new Dutch CD - A Touch Of Class (disc 7877032) has 20 tracks by Nat. Half of the tracks are from The Billy May Sessions double CD, but also included are Let's Fall In Love, There Goes My Heart, Around The World and On The Street Where You Live.

More Nat King Cole "Twofers"

EMI's very successful "Twofer" CD issues will be issuing a third "Twofer" by Nat King Cole - probably in March 1998.

The following are LPs under consideration:

  • Dear Lonely Hearts
  • I Don't Want To Be Hurt Anymore
  • Where Did Everyone Go
  • Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days Of Summer
  • Night Lights
  • The Nat King Cole 10th Anniversary Album
  • The Unreleased Nat King Cole
  • The Great Songs
  • Thank You Pretty Baby
  • Looking Back
  • This Is Nat King Cole

If you have a preference for any of these or if like me you'll just be happy to see another "Twofer" write to the project co-ordinator Mike McNally. His address is:

EMI House
43, Brook Green
London

Jack Constanzo

Imagine my surprise while attending a Stan Kenton celebrity lunch in Pasadena in May to find myself sitting next to Jack Constanzo, the legendary bongo player who played with Nat King Cole for five years (and also played with Stan Kenton).

It was interesting meeting. Jack said that his years with Nat were the best of his life.

I also had breakfast with Gerry Wiggins - the pianist who played on Nat's Welcome To The Club album.

New USA Single

New Capitol CD single issued in the USA couples Nat's original recordings of Send For Me with Unforgettable. Catalogue Number: Capitol 7 2438 58596 - 2 5.

New Giants Of Jazz CD

Another budget-priced CD on the Giants Of Jazz label CD 53169 by the King Cole Trio contains 22 tracks, all previously issued on the Mosaic label.

Twelve of the tracks feature Nat on the piano without him singing.

Rarest of the tracks are In A Mellow Tone, Whatcha Gonna Do and Don't Let Your Eyes Go Shopping For Your Heart.

Forrest Lawns - Glendale

While I was in America I took the opportunity to visit Nat's final resting place at Forrest Lawns. It was really interesting. Nat is adjacent to George Burns, Gracie Allen and Alan Ladd.

However be advised that there is more than one Forrest Lawns and they are a long way from each other, so if you find the wrong one you've a fair distance to travel.

Nat's at Forrest Lawns Glendale but if anyone is thinking of making the trip, do feel free to contact me at first for more detailed directions (or see A picture of Nat's Grave, by Eric Rohr). It's not easy to find the mausoleum even once you've got the right Forrest Lawns.

New Readers' Digest CD Set

I expect many of you have seen the recent review by Robert Rice (In Tune magazine) of the new USA Readers' Digest issue of Nat King Cole's songs entitled Nat King Cole - His Greatest Hits and Most Romantic Performances. It's a three CD set, and there are some interesting songs among the 60 tracks including a first CD release for Be Still My Heart.

The following tracks have only had a CD release on a rare 8 CD Japanese boxed set: Forgive My Heart, I Don't Want To Be Hurt Anymore, With You On My Mind, You Made Me Love You and Someone You Love.

There are other difficult-to-find songs included, such as Ask Me, Come Closer To Me, I Almost Lost My Mind and It's A Lonesome Old Town.

This, the third box set of Nat King Cole's CD issued in America by Readers' Digest, is far superior in content to the other two issues, although it contains only 3 CDs against the others 4.

For Sentimental Reasons

A new CD out by Nat and issued on yet another new label for him - President. PLCD 555 was issued in the UK in February 1997 and contains 24 tracks including How Deep Is The Ocean, Could Ja, How Does It Feel, I've Got The World On A String and I'd Love To Make Love To You.
